Moving
Whether you hire a mover or do it yourself,
be sure to plan your move many weeks in advance.
You will need to arrange for boxes, tape,
packing paper, bubble wrap and transportation to safely transport
your possessions. If you are really in a bind for time, you
can even hire the movers to pack all of your possessions the
day before your move. When the day of your move gets near,
you will need to pack a bag for the day before your move and
the day of your move with clothes and toiletries. Important
financial information and records should be kept separate
from your packed items.
If you are moving out of a building, complex
or flat, you likely need to contact your association and/or
management company to reserve an elevator, a loading dock
or obtain proper approvals to schedule your move. A few moving
companies used by our clients in Chicago include:
When booking a moving company you should
get references, check with local chambers of commerce and
business organizations for complaints against the movers,
you should obtain an estimate for all costs (including packing
materials, labor and transportation) well in advance of your
move.
Additionally, you may want to pick up signs
from the
local alderman to reserve space on the street for your
moving truck.
Mail
The US Postal service recommends you fill
out a change of address form either on-line or at the post
office at least 10 business days prior to your move. In our
experience, you may wish to initiate your change of address
even sooner. Additionally, a few months before your move compile
a list of all of your bills, magazines and other expected
mail so that in addition to changing your address with the
post office, you can change the address directly with your
service providers, financial institutions, credit card companies,
utilities, schools, insurers, newspapers, and the like. It
is helpful to fill out forms which usually accompany your
monthly statements or contact companies directly to ensure
delivery to your new address. Helpful contact information
can be found at the following web sites:
Utility Companies
Prior to moving you will need to
call each of your utility providers to disconnect service
at your current address and establish service at your new
address. This should be done a couple months in advance of
your move since some providers need extra time. Some helpful
numbers and websites are listed below.
